Following the release of their collaborative album, The Auditorium, Vol. 1, Chicago rapper/actor Common and legendary hip-hop producer Pete Rock will hit the road, making a stop in Charlotte this week at The Fillmore.
The Auditorium, Vol. 1, the first project the two hip-hop icons have collaborated on since 1996, is a 15-track album that features guest appearances from De La Soul’s Posdnuos, Bilal, Jennifer Hudson, and Greensboro native singer-songwriter PJ. Rock is best known as one half of the rap duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth and the classic boom bap era hit, “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.).” He also produced Nas’ “The World Is Yours,” AZ’s “Rather Unique,” Das EFX’s “Real Hip Hop,” and the original demo for A Tribe Called Quest’s “Jazz (We’ve Got It),” among many other tracks. Along with Gang Starr (DJ Premier), The Roots, and A Tribe Called Quest, Rock was influential in blending jazz and funk into hip-hop music in the ’90s.
Common is best known for his songs “The Light” (produced by J-Dilla), “Go!” (produced by Kanye West), “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” and “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop),” along with his acting roles in American Gangster, Selma, and John Wick: Chapter 2. He last performed in Charlotte for a Biden-Harris campaign concert at The Park Expo & Conference Center in 2020.
