The Harvey B. Gantt Center celebrates Juneteenth with an all-day event reflecting on their 50 years as an organization, focusing on artistic perspectives, conversations surrounding the impact of Blackness, and the importance of positive exchange in the community. The event will feature live performances, workshops, panels, and art installations for all ages to enjoy. This year’s festivities were co-curated by Charlotte artist, Sir Will.

Event Schedule, Activities, and Activations:

Covered in Peace: Plant Installation & Photo Backdrop
12 p.m. – 6 p.m. (3rd Floor Mezzanine)

A vibrant, plant-based art installation and photo backdrop created by Root Papi.

Community Affirmation Board
12 p.m. – 6 p.m. (3rd Floor Mezzanine)

Craft and share empowering statements for yourself and your community in a mosaic of affirmations.

We Are the Rhythm
12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. (2nd Floor Lobby)

Recording artists from GrindHaus Studios (Chayce and Monae), dancers from Vision Elite Royalty Dance Company, and the drum group from Unity Learning Academy will perform and share why rhythm is a healing and unifying art form.

Broken Crayon Children and Family Workshop
12 p.m. – 2 p.m. (Performance Suite/Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor)

A workshop for the little ones featuring crafts and coloring with Juneteenth-themed visuals on the projector screen led by mobile art studio, Broken Crayon LLC.

Community Wellness Experience
12 p.m. – 1 p.m.  (4th Floor)

Practice breathing exercises, meditation, and beginner-level mindful movement with wellness facilitator Abby.

Gantt Center Tour
1:30 p.m. (Vistor Experience Desk, 2nd Floor Lobby)

A docent-led tour that includes the history of the Gantt and a discussion of the current art exhibitions.

Black Culture Interactive Performance with Dynasty
1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. (4th Floor)

An interactive cultural reflection that honors Juneteenth, featuring guests sharing music, film, and iconic moments in Black history.

Black is the Trend
2 pm – 3:30 pm (2nd Floor Lobby)

A panel discussion highlighting multiple industries impacted and influenced by Black creators, moderated by fashion marketing professional and educator Perrine DeShield.

Family Art with Tiya Caniel
2:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. (Performance Suite/Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor)

A multi-media abstract drop-in workshop where guests can freely express their emotions without words through crafts led by visual artist Tiya Caniel.

Gantt Center Tour
4 p.m. (Visitor Experience Desk, 2nd Floor Lobby)

A docent-led tour that includes the history of the Gantt and a discussion of the current art exhibitions.

Mental Liberation Art Workshop with Carla Aaron-Lopez
4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.

This workshop will focus on collaging and journaling as acts of mindfulness to calm your thoughts and center yourself during this year’s Juneteenth celebration, led by Carla Aaron-Lopez.

Performance: Leone and the Ascension
4:30 p.m – 6 p.m. (2nd Floor Lobby)

Singer-songwriter and musician Leone and his band the Ascension close out the celebration a special performance.
