January 20 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

MLK Day 2025: Designing the Future

Monday, January 20, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Harvey B. Gantt Center
551 South Tryon St.
Charlotte, NC 28202

Tickets: Free (with registration)

The Harvey B. Gantt Center will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the theme of building a more equitable and sustainable future. This year’s event draws inspiration from the visionary work of Floyd McKissick, a pioneering North Carolina civil rights leader, attorney, and architect of Soul City

In the ’70s, McKissick dreamed of creating a thriving, self-sustaining community that would provide equal opportunities for Black Americans. His bold vision continues to inspire today, and The Gantt will honor his legacy on MLK Day.

The event will feature a variety of activities, including art workshops, performances, and discussions that explore the themes of McKissick’s legacy. A special panel will include Harvey Gantt, Charlotte’s first Black mayor and a co-designer of Soul City, alongside Thomas Healy, law professor and author of Soul City: Race, Equality, and the Lost Dream of an American Utopia.
