Cuban-born percussionist and bandleader best known for his mastery of Afro-Cuban rhythms, Pedrito Martinez, returns to Charlotte this week for The Jazz Room at Booth Playhouse. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Martinez will perform his classic Cuban Rumbas and Afro-Cuban folkloric music with his band, The Pedrito Martinez Group. A multi-instrumentalist who plays a range of percussion instruments such as the batá, conga, and cajón, Martinez will perform with his talented cast of musicians including Manny Marquez (percussion), Ahmed Alom (keys), Sebastian Natal (bass), and Xito Lovell (trombone).
A winner of the Thelonious Monk Competition for Afro-Latin Hand Drumming, he was also a founding member of Yerba Buena, a Grammy Nominated Afro-Cuban/Afro-beat band. The Pedrito Martinez Group also received a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2013 for their self-titled release, and their 2016 album, Habana Dreams, was the No. 1 Latin Jazz Album in NPR’s Jazz Critics Top Jazz Albums list. Martinez has performed with esteemed musicians and artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Angélique Kidjo, and Eric Clapton.
