A new compilation album, Cardinals at the Window, has been released with an astonishing list of contributing bands and artists to help raise funds for Helene relief efforts in western North Carolina. Curated and organized by journalist Grayson Haver Currin, musician Libby Rodenbough (Mipso) and David Walker (founder of New Commute), the album features tracks from The War on Drugs, Little Brother, Deer Tick, MJ Lenderman, R.E.M., Indigo De Souza, Tyler Childers, Pat Junior, Angel Olsen, Sonny Miles, Sylvan Esso, Dawes, Hiss Golden Messenger, and many more. All of the proceeds will be split between nonprofits Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR), and BeLoved Asheville, according to the official Bandcamp page

“Cardinals at the Window,” a compilation album featuring an impressive collection of bands and artists, will help raise funds for Helene relief efforts in western North Carolina. Artwork by James Madison Mitchell

The phrase “cardinals at the window,” which is often looked at as a sign of good luck and blessings, is a fitting name for an album that will contribute to helping those who have lost their homes, businesses, and some, even their loved ones. The cardinal is of course also the state bird of North Carolina. Many of the musical contributions are from artists and musicians who are currently living in or are from the western part of the state like Indigo De Souza, MJ Lenderman, Floating Action, Helado Negro, and The Nude Party.

It’s a vast collection of music that is well worth the $10 download on Bandcamp featuring rare live recordings from R.E.M., Fleet Foxes, Jason Isbell, Bahamas, American Aquarium, The Decemberists, Phish, and many more. There are also several unreleased tracks from the likes of Real Estate, Waxahatchee, Little Brother (featuring BeMyFiasco and Denaine Jones), Dawes, Hiss Golden Messenger, Sharon Van Etten, Mary Lattimore, Kevin Morby, Sylvan Esso, Flock of Dimes, Lou Hazel, Carlitta Durand, and many others.

The album was engineered and mastered by producer Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso) and indie folk singer-songwriter Alli Rogers (Alli Blois) with support from artists and music industry professionals like Shirlette Ammons, Martin Anderson, Anna Morris, Cory Rayborn, and Rusty Sutton.

It’s a majestic and expansive collection of music for only $10 (extra donations are encouraged) that will assist those who have been affected by Helene, to help restore the lands and people of a region that we all collectively treasure. You can purchase Cardinals at the Window exclusively on Bandcamp, and 100% of the proceeds will be split between nonprofits Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR), and BeLoved Asheville.

There are several ways to help musicians and artists who have been affected by Helene, and resources to get assistance. Here is our updated list of fundraisers, organizations, nonprofits, and government programs
