One Night in Miami… at Independent Picture House (February 26-27)

As part of its Black History Month series, Independent Picture House presents a screening of One Night in Miami…, Regina King’s 2020 feature directorial debut based on Kemp Powers’ acclaimed stage play. The film is a fictionalized account of a historic night on February 25, 1964, when Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke gathered at the Hampton House to celebrate Ali’s surprise title victory over Sonny Liston while engaging in powerful conversations about race, activism, and Black identity. Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr., the film received critical praise for its performances, direction, and screenplay, earning three Academy Award nominations. Screenings will take place on Thursday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, February 27 at 4:15 p.m., followed by a post-film discussion on Thursday featuring Dr. James Ford, Dr. Keith Cradle, Dr. Moses Fox III, Dr. Willie Griffin, and Dr. de’Angelo Dia.

Charlotte indie folk singer-songwriter Ali Forrest is still riding the momentum of her 2025 release Cagefighter, and alternative rockers Camisole released their latest EP, Vertigo, in November.

Fresh off a busy 2025 that included the release of two new albums, Code Derivation and Keys to the City Volume One, featuring collaborations with artists such as Black Thought, Thundercat, and Norah Jones, Glasper returns to Charlotte for the first time since 2022. Widely celebrated for his innovative collaborations across modern jazz and R&B, he is also a member of the supergroup Dinner Party alongside Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, and 9th Wonder.
