In 2001, a grassroots organization called Charlotte Pride hosted a yearly event at Marshall Park celebrating the LGBTQ community. After a tumultuous event in 2005 that brought a record number of anti-LGBT protesters, the new “Pride Charlotte” was organized. The first series of annual events took place in Gateway Village from 2006 to 2009 and in 2010, the festival moved to North Carolina Music Factory. In 2011 the festival made a historic move to Uptown on Tryon st. to the Levine Avenue of the Arts just a week before the DNC.

Hitting record numbers in 2013, the festival and parade has continued to grow significantly, making an economic impact of $11.9 million dollars in 2015 with an estimated 120,000 visitors.

With recent legislation that has caused a bit of controversy and a lot of unwanted attention to the state of North Carolina, we imagine that 2016 was another record breaking year for Charlotte Pride.

We enjoyed looking through so many photos from this two-day celebration of diversity and culture in Uptown on Instagram. So, we decided to share our favorites to highlight some of the best moments of Charlotte Pride 2016.
