Durag Fest returns to Charlotte on Saturday, June 19. The annual Juneteenth celebration showcasing Black fashion, art, music and culture will feature multiple venues this year including events at Victoria Yards, NASCAR Hall of Fame Plaza and Camp North End.
In addition, a new Durag Fest app has been created to highlight Black creatives and ensure accessibility.
“With the advent of TikTok we are watching Black culture get colonized in real time. Countless Black creatives are being robbed of their ideas and denied compensation. So this year, we want to give ‘us’ our flowers ‘cause we deserve ‘em,” said co-founder of Durag Fest, Dammit Wesley in a press release.
Kicking off the festivities at Victoria Yards, a Deep Wave Day Party with a vendor marketplace will start at 12:00 p.m. at the popular new outdoor event space in uptown. Nascar Hall of Fame Plaza will host an art installation this year with a “Durag Hall of Fame,” featuring images of Charlotteans with dance performances and a B-Boy cypher starting at 2 p.m.
The evening will cap off with the DU After Dark event at Camp North End from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. with the annual wave check and street fashion show along with performances from local artists.
Durag Fest takes place on Saturday, June 19 at Victoria Yards from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m., NASCAR Hall of Fame Plaza at 2 p.m., and Camp North End from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m.
Tickets are free but require an RSVP with donations accepted. Download the Durag Fest app.
