On Wednesday, October 21, vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris came through Charlotte on the campaign trail to visit local business Social Status to meet with owner James Whitner. Whitner, who is the owner of several retail stores across the country discussed the Social Status Converse collaboration with New York-based artist Nina Chanel Abney, a sneaker backed by local HBCU’s capturing the energy of youth culture to “push the idea of voting and connectivity.”
Senator Harris, who has recently gained attention for her footwear choices hopping out of campaign planes wearing everything from Timberlands to Chuck Taylors, also spent some time with Joe La Puma, host of Complex’s popular YouTube show, Sneaker Shopping. The two discussed her fashion choices while attending Howard University, small business development in the minority community, and the Converse collaboration inspired by Harris.
The vice presidential candidate also purchased a pair of the Converse Social Status and Nina Chanel Chuck Taylor’s that benefit Charlotte HBCU, Johnson C. Smith University.
