Harvey B. Gantt Center presents a special “Big Read,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, celebrating Women’s History Month with North Carolina Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green. Centered on the community reading of Ghanaian-American novelist Yaa Gyasi’s novel, Homegoing, Green will facilitate a creativity salon weaving through layers of identity, historical memory, traditions, and artifacts that provide the eloquence of the many landscapes in Gyasi’s historical fiction novel.
Participants are invited to bring photos, heirlooms, or stories that hold special meaning for them. This event includes writing and discussion that “examines the many narratives, memoirs, stories, poems, novels, and legacies that are hidden in plain sight.” All workshop attendees should have read Homegoing, the book selected for the Big Read program. You may be eligible to receive a free copy of the book by contacting the Gantt’s Museum Store.
Jaki Shelton Green is the first African American and third woman appointed as the North Carolina Poet Laureate. She teaches at Duke University Center for Documentary Studies and is the owner of SistaWRITE, an organization that provides writing retreats for women writers. Green also serves as the Poet Laureate in Residence at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
