Legendary jazz musician, bandleader, and composer, Herbert Hancock, will perform at Charlotte’s Belk Theater this week. With an illustrious career spanning over five decades and 14 Grammy Awards, Hancock continues to enchant audiences worldwide with his musical genius. Starting his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd before joining Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet, he helped to redefine the role of the jazz rhythm section and was instrumental in shaping the post-bop sound.
In the ’70s, Hancock ventured into a new musical frontier, utilizing synthesizers and various instruments blending jazz, funk and electronic music. His 1983 hit, “Rockit,” produced by Bill Laswell and Michael Beinhorn, merged synth-funk with hip-hop, winning a Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.
Hancock’s profound and innovative contributions to music has been unmatched, as he currently serves as the Creative Chair for Jazz with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.
