The Charlotte Checkers and Charlotte Knights will host their first outdoor hockey game at Truist Field on Saturday, January 13. It’s the first-ever Checkers outdoor game as well as the first professional outdoor hockey match in Charlotte’s history.
The Queen City Outdoor Classic will see the hometown Checkers (AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers) facing the Rochester Americans (AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres) with a full regulation rink located between first and third base across the infield.
There will also be a free Fan Fest on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in front of Truist Field between 3rd Street and W Martin Luther King Blvd on S Mint. The event will feature a live DJ, yard games, vendors, and a variety food trucks including Tin Kitchen, Blasian Asian Way, Endless Soulfood, Draper’s Funnel Cakes, Detour Coffeebar, and Abbott’s Frozen Custard. You can cheer on the Charlotte Checkers when they arrive at 4 p.m. (gates open at 5:30 p.m.) before the scheduled 7:04 p.m. face-off. The popular snow tubing hill from Light The Knights Festival will also be operating pregame and during intermissions with a fireworks show following the game.
There have been 11 outdoor games in American Hockey League history with only two previously hosted at minor league baseball stadiums (Rochester vs. Lake Erie at Rochester’s Frontier Field in 2013 and Stockton vs. Bakersfield at Sacramento’s Raley Field in 2015).
