After locking in his third season with the Panthers, Jalen Coker is settling into life in Charlotte

There’s no question that third-year Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker has turned into a fan favorite in the Carolinas. Why wouldn’t you root for him? The DMV native, who went undrafted in the 2024 draft, has been one of general manager Dan Morgan’s best pick-ups, playing more like a top prospect in the mid-rounds when he’s been on the field.

It hasn’t been easy for the 24-year-old, who attended Holy Cross, the small private liberal arts college in Worcester, Massachusetts, which competes in the FCS. After Coker initially signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in May 2024, he was waived on August 28 as the team finalized the 53-man roster, then re-signed to the practice squad and activated in September of the same year to a league-minimum contract following Adam Thielen’s trade.

The Panthers tendered his one-year exclusive rights free agent (ERFA) contract after two seasons of solid performance, including a standout showing against the Rams in the Wild Card playoff game, where he caught nine balls for 134 yards and what would have been a game-winning touchdown if not for Matt Stafford’s two-minute brilliance.

Coker is now getting acclimated to the city, entering his second offseason and third year in the NFL, getting more familiar with Charlotte and all it has to offer.

“Having like a true city vibe, city life, you know, I feel like a lot of people that are out in Charlotte are around my age, so that’s kind of cool to experience,” he said. “I’m pretty well acclimated to the city… and it’s not far from home either… family comes all the time. So it’s awesome.”

He mentions that some of his favorite spots in the city that he and his girlfriend Jenna like to frequent are Moo & Brew in Plaza Midwood and Catalina in Elizabeth. While his performance in the Panthers’ first home playoff game in a decade raised his profile further in the city, he says he still enjoys a fairly normal life, making occasional Target and Marshalls runs. They also went to the Billie Eilish concert in Charlotte back in October.

“You try to find those little pockets of time to go do fun stuff like that during the season… Charlotte has so much stuff to offer,” he said. “I mean, I’ve definitely been caught after practice, just kind of hanging out in the facility and listening to whoever’s playing in The Bank.”

He’s been to a Hornets game but hasn’t been to a Charlotte FC game yet; he wants to go soon.

“I know they just played at home, but I want to get to one of those games. I have been to a Hornets game. It was a really cool experience.”

Jalen Coker has teamed up with Canal Coffee Company for a cold brew collaboration.

Coker also wants to be more involved in the community and is teaming up with Canal Coffee Company, a family-owned, drive-thru coffee chain with three locations in the Charlotte area, for a meet-and-greet at the Humane Society on Saturday. Fans can come by and enjoy his signature cold brew — which has spiced brown sugar, honey, cold cinnamon foam, and caramel — and spend time with some adoptable pets who are still waiting for their second chance. The event is free and open to the public, but instead of a ticket, guests are invited to bring a donation of pet supplies to help support the animals.

Jalen and Jenna have adopted a dog and cat from the Humane Society and will host a meet-and-greet in Charlotte on Saturday.

“It’s something that I myself personally connect with, you know, me and my girlfriend are big coffee lovers. So the Canal partnership was just a no-brainer,” he said. “We got two of our animals from the Humane Society, so that was obviously something that was important to us.”

Coker’s family presence has also been heavily felt in Charlotte. His dad, Jamal, was a standout high school wide receiver at Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, and his mom, Jenny, played basketball on the practice squad for the University of Virginia women’s basketball team. His parents, along with his younger brother Jaxon and sister Jemma, can often be seen in the lower bowl in the 130s section enthusiastically cheering on Jalen. His father Jamal, a lifelong Panthers fan, has become well known within the fan base, fervently supporting his son and the team at games and on social media. Family and football have always been big for the Cokers.

“I think that’s been since I was, you know, playing flag football… They always come to every game, even in college, you know, the away games, all that stuff; they are always there, grandparents as well,” he said. “I feel like sports are such a great way to bring a family together, people together.”

As for preparation for the crucial final year in his contract before becoming a free agent next season, he’s not changing his approach much, focusing on staying close to the team and home base.

“Trying to be a sponge, you know, just take all the information in… get to know the staff, all that good stuff,” Coker said. “Just taking more care of my body, making sure that I’m in better shape coming into camp, you know, just kind of learning how to be a professional.”

He credits veterans like Shaq Thompson, David Moore, and Adam Thielen for mentoring him during his rookie season, and regarding the wide receiver room and his confidence with Bryce Young, Coker is very optimistic about the 2026 season.

“We do have a young room. But I feel just as talented as any room in the entire league… I think it’s just an awesome opportunity for me to, you know, learn and just grow as a player,” he said. “Sky’s the limit. He’s [Bryce Young] an amazing player, a one-of-a-kind athlete. So anything I can do to make his job a little easier is good for the team.”

It will be a pivotal year for Coker, and with Rookie of the Year Tetairoa McMillan drawing significant attention at the X, he has a prime opportunity to emerge as the offense’s long-term complementary piece — building a formidable duo reminiscent of Steve Smith Sr., who praised him highly before the draft, and Muhsin Muhammad in the early-to-mid 2000s.

Jalen Coker will be at the Humane Society of Charlotte (1348 Parker Drive) on Saturday, March 14, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for a meet-and-greet. The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of pet supplies to help support the animals.
