The Charlotte Crown are the inaugural UPSHOT League champions, defeating the Jacksonville Waves 81-76 behind a stellar 29-point performance from Tar Heel Deja Kelly, who also recorded six rebounds, three assists, and two steals to earn the Ann Meyers Drysdale Trophy as league MVP. The championship caps a remarkable turnaround for the Crown, who won 14 of their final 15 games after opening the season 1-6, fueled in large part by former Winthrop Eagle and Tennessee Volunteer Schaquilla Nunn, who led the league in rebounds and blocks and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and a spot on the All-UPSHOT Team. The Crown will celebrate their historic championship with a free event Monday night in the East Charlotte Room at Bojangles Coliseum, featuring Crown players and coaches, mascot Regal, Crown merchandise, a cash bar, and more.

David Fincher’s cult classic Fight Club screens at Independent Picture House this week, giving Charlotte audiences a chance to experience the provocative 1999 film on the big screen. Starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter, the film follows an insomnia-plagued office worker whose encounter with the charismatic Tyler Durden leads to the creation of an underground fight club that spirals into a much larger movement. Based on Chuck Palahniuk’s novel, Fight Club initially polarized audiences and underperformed at the box office before finding a devoted following on home video and becoming one of the most influential cult films of the ’90s.

The Crown enters the matchup coming off a 2-0 victory over rival Atlanta United, with Idan Toklomati and Liel Abada finding the back of the net. Allan Saint-Maximin played a key role in both goals, assisting on Toklomati’s opener before setting up Abada for a second-half strike. Charlotte has gone unbeaten in seven of its last nine matches since returning from the World Cup break and currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference.
