After playing their inaugural home game on Thursday, the Crown of the women’s professional basketball UPSHOT League return to take on the Greensboro Groove in their third game of the season. After winning their season opener against the Jacksonville Waves, the Crown fell 98-86 in their home opener after being out-rebounded and shooting just 38.2% from the field. Both teams enter the game at .500, with Charlotte sitting at 1-1 and the Greensboro Groove at 2-2. The Crown’s backcourt tandem of Deja Kelly and AD Durr will need a much more efficient performance, and the team will need to be far more aggressive on the boards to come away with the win.

R&B/neo-soul singer Alex Isley brings her When The City Sleeps tour to Charlotte this week following the release of her fourth solo studio album and major-label debut with Warner Records. The daughter of Ernie Isley of The Isley Brothers, Isley has built a reputation for her warm vocals and blend of R&B, neo-soul, and jazz influences. The new album expands on the sound she explored with I Left My Heart in Ladera, her collaborative project with Terrace Martin, and features collaborations with James Fauntleroy and Syd. Over the years, Isley has also worked with artists including Robert Glasper, Masego, PJ Morton, 9th Wonder, and SiR, earning a Grammy nomination for “Back to Love” with Glasper in 2024. Opening the show will be The Armours, the R&B and soul duo composed of Washington, D.C. sisters Jakiya Ayanna and Shaina Aisha.

The Independent Picture House continues its “Laughter, Love & Conscience” series this week, celebrating the life and work of filmmaker Rob Reiner with Stand by Me, the acclaimed 1986 coming-of-age drama directed by Reiner and based on Stephen King’s novella The Body. Set in 1959 Oregon, the film follows four young boys — played by Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell — who set out on a journey to find the body of a missing child, an experience that tests their friendship and marks the passage from childhood into adolescence. Upon release, Stand by Me earned critical acclaim and commercial success, including Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, and has since become regarded as a defining coming-of-age classic.
