The Smashing Pumpkins are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their landmark 1995 double album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, with a U.S. tour coming to Charlotte’s Spectrum Center on Friday, October 16.
The 28-track album, which features the singles “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” “1979,” “Zero,” and “Tonight, Tonight,” was certified Diamond by the RIAA after selling more than 10 million copies. It earned the band seven Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “1979,” while winning Best Hard Rock Performance for “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.”
The Smashing Pumpkins will also perform “four decades of hits and dark treasures” on the tour, which kicks off on October 30 in Ohio and runs through November with dates across the West Coast.
Emerging from the Chicago music scene in the late ’80s with a sound that blended grunge, shoegaze, heavy metal, dream pop, and psychedelic rock, The Smashing Pumpkins became one of the defining bands of the ’90s, helping expand alternative rock beyond the grunge movement.
The Smashing Pumpkins last performed in Charlotte in 2023 for their The World Is a Vampire Tour. Presale begins Tuesday, May 19 at 10 a.m., with tickets going on sale to the general public on Thursday, May 21 at 10 a.m.
